ADHD Management

If you or your child identify with traits commonly associated with ADHD, your GP can discuss next steps and provide a referral to a psychiatrist or paediatrician for formal assessment and diagnosis.

There are currently no doctors consulting at Harding Street Medical Centre who provide formal ADHD diagnosis.

In Victoria, ADHD diagnosis and stimulant medication prescribing are regulated. The Victorian Government has announced training for an initial group of 150 GPs to diagnose and treat ADHD, with accredited training expected by September 2026. No doctors currently consulting at HSMC are part of this group.

Some GPs may prescribe ADHD medication after diagnosis, with a specialist management plan and the required prescribing permit. Permit applications can take a few weeks, so patients should allow time for this process.

Most doctors prefer patients to be stabilised on medication by their specialist before taking over prescribing but this is at the discretion of the individual contractor so please discuss with your GP their preference.

Patients taking ADHD medication require regular monitoring. We recommend booking with the nurse at HSMC to discuss a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan to support ongoing care.
